Terms of trade: What is solder flux?

Solder flow is a material, usually a gel or rosin in modern metalworking, that removes metal oxides from the joints during metal soldering. Without flow, solder will not wet the joints sufficiently, resulting in weaker structural bonds.

A similar process can be used in other types of metallurgy, including extraction, welding and brazing. The term comes from the Latin word "fluxus", which means flow. Early forms of flow include carbon, lime, soda carbonate and borax.
