Terms of trade: What is penetrating oil?

Penetrating fluids, low viscosity oils are popular for lubricating hinged hinges or for loosening rusted fasteners such as nuts and bolts. The name refers to the oil's ability to penetrate the microscopic spaces between the filaments.

In some cases, penetrating oils can be used as detergents to remove metal corrosion or remove sticky residue. Although they are good for a quick fix, they are not good to use as lubricants in the long term, as they tend to evaporate quickly.
