Do large box stores like Lowes and Home Depot sell dirt with regular filling? Where can I buy dirt with regular filling? What is the difference between topsoil and dirt? If you have a dog-dug hole in your garden from a four-legged friend or potholes in your dirt driveway, or if you just need to fill in areas of a landscaped garden, you have probably asked these questions.
Filling dirt is a great way to increase the stability of your garden and fill holes permanently, and it is usually relatively easy to find.
Fill dirt at Lowes and Home Depot
Although it varies from place to place, most Lowes and Home Depot sites do not sell bags of filler. When you only need to fill a small area, you do not want to pay for an entire truck with dirt, so it is tempting to find a bag of filling dirt in a household store.
Call your local store and ask if they have bags of dirt. Be sure to state that you are not looking for topsoil. Because dirt often costs more than dirt in the bag, many companies do not sell bags of fill soil.
Some locations in Home Depot and Lowes have been reported to sell bags of dirt without the small stones and gravel that comes in filling the dirt. In a pinch, you can safely take one of these bags and add your own little stones and gravel to make a real filler mixture. Bags of stone and gravel can also be purchased at a home improvement store.
If you are looking for more than one bag of dirt, you can buy in bulk. Expect to pay about seven to twelve dollars per cubic meter for your dirt ̵
Fill dirt against topsoil
Fill dirt is supposed to go into the ground and last a long, long time. Fill dirt is like the regular dirt you would find if you dug up your yard (which may be why you need to fill more dirt in the first place). Filling dirt can change in brand and texture based on your area of the country, especially if it is locally packaged. For example, if you live near the rocky mountains, your backfill soil may have more clay in the soil while if you live in the south, your backfill soil may have a more acidic PH balance due to all the pines.
Beet soil is used in gardening and is a softer, nutrient-rich soil. It is sometimes used to fill an entire garden box or is only used in the upper half of the garden boxes because it is more expensive. Beet soil is light; it washes easily and is unpacked when wet. This is why topsoil cannot be replaced with backfill dirt. In order for filling dirt to be effective, it must have sustained power.
Another place to look for fill dirt
Check online. Search for craigslist or a local online listing site for dirty ads. You can also call around to local farms or locally owned hardware stores to see if they carry small bags of filler dirt. If you need larger amounts of dirt, call a garden center or a local yard that may be able to put you in but with the right people.
You can also take a cruise around the city and stop at construction sites with your own shovel and bucket and ask if they have extra dirt you may have. This is a good, free way to get the dirt you need – but it takes some time and effort on your part.
Once you have filled the dirt at home and are ready to go, make sure you pack it tightly and water it down. Accounting for rain and other natural events with the water will help you fill the holes exactly and save you from having to go out and fill the hole later.
