How to use fresh turmeric



If you have had curry or have had a recipe with curry powder, you have probably tasted turmeric before. Although well known in its powder form, turmeric actually comes from a large, brown root, similar to ginger. Many people believe that turmeric can help reduce inflammation and help with knee pain and skin irritation. [1] This ingredient may seem a little daunting if you do not cook a lot, but it is very easy to sprinkle on dishes and mix in different drinks. Try experimenting with fresh turmeric in your favorite dishes and drinks and see how you like it!

  1. Rinse your turmeric with clean water. Hold your turmeric over the sink and brush away any obvious dirt or debris. Shake off extra water so it doesn't drip wet. [2]

  2. Use a vegetable peeler to remove the outer skin. Hold your fresh turmeric over the sink and work along the edges with a scaler. Try to get rid of all the skin on the outside. Since the root is a bit uneven and uneven, removing all the skin can be a little tricky – just do your best! [3]
    • Peeling turmeric is a very similar process to peeling ginger.
  3. Rub the peeled root against a fine, sharp grater. Because turmeric is used as a spice, you do not need to include much of it in your dishes and drinks.   1. Tear fresh turmeric over soups and other tasty dishes. Heat a bowl of your favorite soup for lunch or dinner. Before diving in, rinse and peel some of the turmeric to remove the outer skin, then use a grater to garnish your soup with spice. You can also sprinkle fresh turmeric over other dishes, such as egg or tuna salad. [6]

    • Fresh turmeric is a good complement to vegetarian dishes too! Try to sprinkle a little on your favorite tofu dish and see how you like it.
    • Turmeric is especially yummy on vegetable soups.
  2. Add a sprinkle of freshly baked turmeric to your scrambled eggs. Whip up a batch of your favorite scrambled eggs. Sprinkle some fresh turmeric in the eggs as they cook. When your eggs are dressed, they will have a delicious hint of turmeric. [7]
    • Pepper and turmeric go very well together.
  3. Mix fresh turmeric with pepper and add it to your butter. Tear at least 1 teaspoon (3 g) of fresh turmeric in a bowl of soft butter, along with a small spoon of pepper. Stir all the ingredients together to create a delicious, aromatic butter. Use this when sautéing or roasting vegetables. [8]
    • This can also be a good topping for grilled fish.
    • This is also known as "compound butter."
  4. Sprinkle a spoonful of fresh turmeric over mashed potatoes. Prepare your mashed potatoes as you usually would, then cut the desired serving on your plate. Before digging in, take a small section of fresh, peeled turmeric and tear it over the top of your mashed potatoes. [9]

    • Start with a small amount to see how you like taste.
  5. Improve your roasted vegetables with some fresh turmeric. Tear a small amount of fresh, peeled turmeric on top of all cooked vegetables. Start with a small amount, then add more if you like the taste a lot! [10]
    • Turmeric goes well with all types of roasted vegetables.
  6. Whip up a tasty salad dressing with fresh turmeric and olive oil. Mix tahini, lemon juice, olive oil, ½ teaspoon (1.5 g) turmeric and ¼ teaspoon (0.5 g) cayenne pepper in a bowl. Add in a pinch of salt and plain pepper, then stir all the ingredients together. Pour your new dressing into a vinaigrette container and store in the fridge until you are ready to use it. [11]

  1. Brew turmeric with ginger to make an aromatic tea. Pour some boiling water into a mug and then grate in a small spoonful of fresh ginger and turmeric. Set a timer for 3-5 minutes to let the tea steep before enjoying the drink. [14]

  2. Sprinkle some turmeric in your favorite smoothie. Prepare your favorite smoothie as you usually do by adding the ingredients in a blender. Sprinkle a spoon or fresh turmeric on top before mixing it all together. Place the lid on the mixer and then pulse all ingredients into a smoothie. [15]

    • Start with small amounts of turmeric at first. You don't want to overwhelm your smoothie!
  3. Make some aromatic "golden milk" with turmeric and cardamom. Pour soy milk into a saucepan, then add a handful of peppercorns, cardamom skis and a cinnamon stick. Tear a pinch of fresh ginger and turmeric over the milk and spices. Let the ingredients steep for 3-5 minutes, then strain the milk into a glass. [16]

    • Stir a squeeze of honey into your milk as a nice touch.
  4. Whip up an anti-inflammatory drink with turmeric and coconut water. Mix coconut water, ½ cup (25 g) ginger slices, 6 mint sprigs, lemon juice, 1 tbsp (9 g) turmeric, ¼ teaspoon (2 g) cardamom, ⅛ teaspoon (0.6 g) sea salt) and 0.3 tsp (0, 3 g) cayenne or black pepper in a mixer. Pulse the ingredients until they are even, even and then pour the drink into a cup. Transfer the beverage to a jug or portable cup and pour a splash of coconut water on top of the drink. Place the drink in the fridge overnight so that it can cool and then enjoy the next day! [17]

    • You can also add raw honey and coconut milk to make your drink sweeter and creamier.
