How to tie colored pants

Tie dyeing is a great way to add some color and pattern to your jaggings, leggings, yoga pants or harem pants. As long as your pants are made of mostly cotton, you can tie dyes in any style, including jaggings, leggings, yoga pants or harem pants. All you need is a single afternoon to create a fun new style!

[[[[Edit]Scrape or fold your pants

  1. Choose white cotton trousers. You can tie color leggings, yoga pants or even jeggings, as long as they are made of 1
00% cotton. Check the label on your pants to find out what material they are and make sure they are mostly white.[1]

    • Tie colors show best on white clothes.
    • If you dye yoga pants or leggings, they may have some elastic mixed with the cotton. As long as it is below 10%, your tie color will still work well.
  2. Lay your pants flat. Flatten the pants on a flat surface, such as a table or countertop. Make sure the surface is clean so that you do not soil your white trousers and smooth out wrinkles or creases in your trousers with your hands.[2]

    • You do not have to iron your pants; just use your hands to even them out as best you can.
  3. Scrape your pants up to the waist for a splash effect. Grab the bottom of your pants and push them up towards the waist. Take the waistband towards the legs of the trousers and try to make a large fabric ball.[3]
    • This ruffled method gives a random splatter effect to your pants.
  4. Fold your pants accordion style for a spiral design. Start at the bottom of the pants’ 1 leg and fold it up into a horizontal section. Turn that fold over itself to make a second fold. Continue this all the way up both pants and then fold the waistband in the same way.[4]
    • This folding method creates a more classic pattern with spiral binding color.
  5. Wrap rubber bands around the center of your pants to get a bullseye. Pinch the middle of your pants upwards and wrap a rubber band around them so that they stay in place. Continue to pinch and fasten rubber bands together until you can not grab more fabric.[5]
    • This creates a bullseye design that comes out of the center of your rubber bands.
  6. Attach rubber bands in random places to keep your design in place. Grab 5 to 6 large rubber bands and place them around your pants to hold your folds together. Make sure your pants stick to their design and will not come loose when you apply your dye.[6]

  1. Wear rubber gloves and lay down plastic to protect the surface. Wear some rubber kitchen gloves or latex gloves to keep your hands protected when using your dye. Then put down a large plastic gift or some large plastic bags to keep the dye, even if you are working outside.[7]

    • You can buy gloves in most home improvement stores.
  2. Mix your dye in individual spray bottles. Open your tie color and follow the instructions on the package. Mix each color in individual plastic bottles with spray bottles so that you can easily pour them out.[8]

    • You can use as many or as few color shades as you want!
    • Classic tie dye usually involves red, green, yellow, purple or blue, but you can also find pastel colors.
    • You can buy tie paint in most craft stores.
  3. Spray paint over the pants in a random pattern for an irregular design. Take your bottles of dye one at a time and spray each color on your pants. Overlap your colors for a design that makes a random pattern.[9]
    • Try using red, purple and blue for a cute color combination.
    • Add yellow and orange dye for light, lively pants.
  4. Add dye to blocks or lines for a sequential pattern. Use each color in blocks or lines that are approximately wide. You can make your colors in an alternating pattern for a cohesive look.[10]
    • Try using red, green and yellow for a classic looking dye.

[[[[Edit]Rinse your pants and let them dry

  1. Put your pants in a plastic bag and let them sit for 6 hours. Do not disturb your pants so that they have time to absorb all the dye. The longer you leave the pants, the more vibrant the colors become. Leave them on a porch or back patio so they don’t move around.[11]

    • You can let your pants sit for as long as 24 hours if you want.
  2. Rinse the pants with cold water. Take your pants out of the plastic bag and run cold water over them in the sink. Continue rinsing the pants until the water is clear so that the dye does not get on any of your other clothes.[12]
    • Cold water will leave your dye intact and not cause the colors to run together.
  3. Let your pants air dry before wearing them. Hang out your pants to dry in the sun until they are no longer damp, or put them in the dryer to dry them faster. Enjoy showing off your DIY tie-colored pants![13]
