How to take a selfie without holding the phone

The classic selfie pose means you hold the phone in front of your face and smile as you attach your picture. The problem with this bag is that your arm can be included in your photo, creating a cumbersome image without much background. If you want to start up your selfie game and try to take a picture without holding the phone, you can use the self-timer or a selfie stick to take better selfies with more natural poses.

[ Edit ] Using a self-timer

  1. Place your phone on a steady surface with the front camera facing you. Choose an area that is about eye level, like a shelf or a chair. Place your phone with the front of the camera facing you on this surface and make sure it is completely upright. [1]

    • If your phone is tilted forward or back at all, it can throw away your selfie depth and cause your face to become distorted.
    • You can set the phone on the page for a landscape selfie or hold it upright for a portrait selfie.
  2. Adjust the lighting and make sure you are in focus. Open your camera app and spend a few minutes adjusting the exposure and focus of your frame. Make sure the area you are in for the photo is in focus. [2]

    • Avoid standing in front of a light source so you don't look washed.
  3. Set the timer to turn off in 10 seconds. Click the option for your self-timer and select the longest option, which is usually 10 seconds. This gives you a chance to move into position and adjust before the timer goes off. [3]

    • Depending on which phone you have, you may be able to set a timer even longer.
  4. Click the photo button and go quickly to your selfie position. Keep an eye on the phone's countdown display to find out when your timer goes off. Move to the position where you want to take your picture as fast as you can. [4]

    • Make sure you do not move when your camera goes off, or your image will probably be blurred.
  5. Look at the camera, not the screen. When you wait for your timer to expire, make sure you look into the camera's lens, not the phone screen. This makes your image seem more natural and not like you are looking at something behind or next to your phone. [5]

    • You can look at the phone screen when adjusting your selfie position, but be sure to move your eyes back to the lens before the timer goes off.
  6. Check your image to see if you want to redo it. If you do, you can simply reset the timer and change the phone's position or your own position. Make sure you keep your phone at about eye level for the best picture. [6]

    • Some phones take time shots in "bursts", which means they take about 10 pictures all at once. If your phone has this option, you can pick and choose which photos you want to keep and which ones you want to delete.

[ Edit ] Holding a Selfie Stick

  1. Connect your phone to the selfie holding the headphone jack cord. Most selfie sticks are attached to your phone with a simple cord. Plug this cord into your headphone jack and make sure it is secure. [7]

    • Some selfie sticks connect to Bluetooth on your phone. If you do, turn on the Bluetooth feature on your selfie stick and pair it with your phone in your Bluetooth settings.
  2. Cut your phone on either side of the selfie stick. Take your phone and place it in the clips at the top of the selfie stick. Make sure your phone sits snugly between the clips so it doesn't fall out. [8]

    • Some selfie sticks have removable clips. If you do, secure the clips around your phone and then attach the clips to the top of your selfie stick by screwing them in place.
  3. Hold the selfie stick in the handle and extend it completely. Grasp the bottom of the selfie stick and pull the top outward until the stick is fully extended. Make sure your phone is secure in the clips before lifting it in the air. [9]

    • Make sure your selfie stick locks in position so that it will stay stable as you take your selfie.
  4. Angle your arm so that the selfie stick is not in the picture. Hold the selfie stick in the handle and put your phone in the air. Look at the front camera on your phone screen to see what your image will look like. Make sure your arm and selfie stick are not in the frame of the image. [10]

  5. Click the button on the selfie stick to take a photo. Find the button on the handle of your selfie stick and click it when you want to take your selfie. Click the button a few times in a row to take a few pictures so you can choose from. [11]
