How to store baked muffins



Homemade muffins are a delicious treat, and they are perfect anytime, whether you enjoy them for breakfast, a quick snack or an abandoned late night. Even better, they are super easy to make yourself! After just a few days, the moisture begins to evaporate from your muffins, leaving the outside moist and the inside dry. Fortunately, you can help slow that process by storing your muffins properly until you are ready to eat them! Store your muffins in an airtight container at room temperature if you eat them within 3 or 4 days, or freeze them if you want to keep them fresh for up to 3 months.

  1. Cool the muffins on a wire rack if they are still hot. When your muffins come out of the oven, transfer them to a wire rack as soon as they are cool enough to handle. The rack allows air to flow throughout the muffins so that they cool evenly.[1]

    • If you put the muffins in a container while they are still hot, the heat will cause condensation, which then makes the surface of the muffins moist.
  2. Cover the wire rack with a towel to hold muffins overnight. If you plan to eat muffins within about 24 hours, you do not need to put them in a container at all. Just cover them with a layer of paper towels or a clean kitchen towel to keep your muffins fresh and moist until you are ready for them.[2]
    • If you think it will take longer than 24 hours before eating the muffins, you can put them in containers as soon as they are cool.
  3. Place the muffins in a paper towel-lined container for up to 4 days. Wipe the bottom of an airtight container with a layer of paper towels. Then place a single layer of muffins in the container and cover the muffins with a second layer of paper towels. Paper towels help absorb condensation that forms, which helps prevent your muffins from getting damp.[3]
    • For best results, use 2 paper towels stacked on each layer or fold a larger paper towel in half. If you have very thick paper towels, it will only be a single layer.
  4. Store your muffins in a cool, dry place. Try to avoid keeping your muffins in a hot or humid place, such as near your hob if you are cooking. If the muffins get hot in their container, it can lead to them becoming stale faster. However, do not put them in the fridge – the moisture in the fridge changes the structure of the muffin and creates a sticky top and a dry center.[4]

    • If you are going to keep your muffins longer than four days, transfer them to the freezer.[5]
  5. Heat the muffins in an oven if you want them to be hot. While your muffins will be perfectly delicious at room temperature, if you want another hot muffin comfort after a few days, do not worry! Just wrap your muffins in aluminum foil – or place them on a baking sheet covered with foil – and wrap them in a preheated oven for about 15 minutes.[6]
    • Smaller muffins (approximately in diameter) will need 12-15 minutes in the oven, while muffins that are or larger will need approximately 15-18 minutes.

  1. Put your chilled muffins in a resealable freezer bag. To keep your muffins fresh for more than a few days, cool them completely and then place them in a plastic freezer bag. Squeeze out as much extra air as possible without squeezing the muffins and then seal the bag.[7]
    • If you prefer, you can wrap the muffins tightly in foil or plastic wrap instead of putting them in a bag.[8]
    • You can also use a hairy container, but try to choose one that does not leave much extra air around the muffins for best results.
  2. Store the muffins in the freezer for up to 3 months. Your muffins have the best texture and flavor if you eat them within about 12 weeks of freezing. But they will still be safe to eat after that – as long as you keep them at a steady temperature, you can store frozen muffins indefinitely.[9]

    • Store your muffins near the back of the freezer, where the temperature remains the most constant.
  3. Thaw the muffins by letting them sit at room temperature for half an hour. There is nothing special you have to do when you want to enjoy a fresh muffin again. Just let them sit on the counter for about 30 minutes to thaw, then eat them cool or heat them in the oven or microwave.[10]

    • If you are in a hurry, defrost the muffins by wrapping them in a damp paper towel and microwave them for 30-60 seconds. After the first 30 seconds, take the muffin out of the microwave and check if it is heated all the way again.[11]
  4. Wrap the muffins in foil and heat them for a warm treatment. Next to freshly baked muffins, wrap them in foil and place them in the oven for about 15 minutes. If you have smaller muffins, they will need about 12-15 minutes, or about 15-18 minutes for larger muffins.[12]
    • For best results, allow the muffins to thaw completely before placing them in the oven. Otherwise, the middle can still be cool when finished.
    • Try putting some butter on top of the muffins before heating them to help restore some moisture that may have been lost during the freezing process.
