How to Play Go Fish

Go Fish is a super fun game that you can play with your friends, and it doesn't take long to learn the rules! Play with 2 to 6 people and focus on getting four matches so you can be the first to put down all your cards. There are some cool ways to change how you play each hand, so you will never get bored with this classic card game.

[ Edit ] Start the game

  1. Choose someone to mix and share the cards for the first round. Go Fish is good as it can be played with as few as 2 players and up to as many as 6 players. The dealer may be the person whose birthday comes the next day, the person who won the last game or someone else you choose. [1]

    • Try to turn as a dealer so that one person does not get stuck and does it every time.
  2. Have the dealer mix and distribute the cards to each player. If there are 2-3 players, each person should receive 7 cards. If there are four or more players, each person should receive 5 cards. [2]

    • Remove all jokers from the deck before mixing and handling the cards.
    • It's okay to look at your cards! Just keep your hand hidden from the other players so they can't see what you have.
  3. Spread the rest of the cards face down in the middle of the table. This creates the "fish pond." Make sure all cards are kept facing down so no one can peek. [3]

    • If you do not have much space at the table, just stack the cards face down in the middle. When someone has to "fish" they can just pick up the top card from the deck.
  4. Let the person sitting to the left of the dealer go first. This is another reason why it is good to change resellers – everyone will get a chance to go first at some point! [4]

[ Edit ] Take turns

  1. Start your turn by asking a player if they have a specific card. Take a look at the cards in your hand and choose to ask about cards you already have multiples so you can make matches faster. For example, if you have two sockets in your hand, you only need 2 more to make a match. The most important thing to remember is that you can only ask one person at a time and that you can only ask for one card at a time. [5]

    • card "means the number and not the suit. It does not matter if the person has a heart attack or diamond crack; if they have any jack at all, they must give it to you.
    • You can only request a specific card if you already have one or more of them in your hand. For example, if you do not have a tree in your hand, you cannot ask for three.
    • Keep in mind that when you ask for a specific card, the other players will know that you have that card in hand. You can all strategize and try to keep track of who has what to give you the advantage of the game.
  2. Give all your cards of a certain rank to the player if they are in your hand. If someone asks you if you have any queens and you do, you have to give all your queens to that person. You can't hold your hand and you can't lie. [6]

  3. Take another turn if you get the cards you asked for. If you continue to be lucky and find the cards you need to make matches, you may be able to take several turns in a row before having to "fish" and move on to the next player. You can ask the same person for another card or ask a new person. [7]

    • Remember that you are trying to make matches from the cards you have in your own hand.
  4. Tell the player to "go fish" if you do not have the cards they ask for. This is the most fun part of the game! If the person asked you for all your queens and you don't have any, tell them to "take fish." The turn then goes to the next player. [8]

    • It can be fun to order people to "fish fish", but remember to do so with a friendly attitude. After all, you play a game with your friends!
  5. Get a card from the fish pond when you have to "fish." It is actually not a horrible thing to have to pull a card from the fish pond, especially at the beginning of the game. It gives you more cards to play with and can help you get more matches. [9]

    • You must keep the card you took, even if it is not one you like. You can't throw it back and choose another one.

[ Edit ] Winning the game

  1. Put down four matches to get cards out of your hand. You can't hold matches in your hand. As soon as you get one, you have to put it in front of you so everyone can see it. In many variants of Go Fish, the one who gets rid of all their cards wins the game first, so it's a good idea to make matches as fast as possible. [10]

    • Some variants of the game, 2-card matches can be played instead of 4-of-a-kind matches.
    • Sets of 4 are often called "books."
  2. Take another turn after placing a match. If you are allowed to place a match, your turn continues. This gives you the chance to start working on your next match before anyone else can remove some of your cards. [11]

  3. Win the game when you no longer have any cards in your hand. The first person to remove all their cards is the winner. If you wish, the remaining players can continue to play until there is also a 2nd place winner, a third place winner, etc. [12]

  4. End the game if the fish pond is empty, although no one has "won". This is an optional end that can be good to use if you like really fast games. You can always decide that the person with the most matches at that time won the match, or that it could only be a draw. [13]

    • You can also choose to continue playing even after the fish pond is empty. You will only turn to get cards from your opponents without having to "fish" at the end of your turn.
