How to paint the inside of a mason jar

Mason jars are usually clear, but you can find them in a wide range of shades and colors. But if you have some clear mason jars that you want to turn into decorative items, there are easy ways to paint the inside of them yourself. You can cover the inside of a mason jar with color to give an opaque color, or you can color the inside of a mason jar with a food color for a transparent color. The color or food color dries on your own, but you can also cure it by placing the jar in the oven if you wish.

  1. Mix acrylic paint in a bowl to achieve the desired shade . Measure out 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of acrylic paint and pour it into a small bowl. You can use a 50/50 blend of 2 different colors to get a specific shade or add a few drops of 1
color to another to adjust the shade slightly. Mix the paint colors together with a spoon or fork. [1]

    • For example, you can use a tablespoon (15 ml) each of blue and white to create a pastel or light blue hue. Or add a few drops of green to 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of white for a light mint green color.
    • If you do not want to adjust the color before painting the can, pour it directly into the can.
  2. Pour the paint into a clean, dry mortar. Wash the jar with wash water and water and then rinse it thoroughly. Let the can air dry upside down or use a paper towel to dry it. Pour the mixed color into the jar when the jar is dry. [2]
    • If you are painting the inside of several jars, measure out two tablespoons (30 ml) of color per jar.
  3. Turn and rotate the bowl to cover the inside of it. Swirl the color around the jar by slowly turning the bowl on the side and rolling it around in your hand. Continue turning and tilting the jar until the inside of it is completely covered in paint. [3]
    • It may take a few minutes as the color moves slowly. However, do not use a brush as it will cause an uneven appearance.
  4. Place the jars up and down on a cardboard box to dry. When the inside of the can is completely coated with the paint, place the can on a carton. The excess paint will continue to drip down, so pick up the jar and move it to another spot on the carton about every 15 minutes. [4]

      1. Combine water and food coloring in a small bowl. Add 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of water to a small bowl. Then add 20 or more drops of food coloring in the water and stir the food color into the water until well combined. [5]
        • You can use any color or combination of colors that you like to color the bowl. Try using blue food coloring for a blue tinted jar or red and yellow for an orange tinted jar.
      2. Pour the mixture into the jar and add 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of white rinsing glue. Use a fork or spoon to stir the food coloring into a water mixture with the glue right inside the jar. Stir until everything is well combined. [6]
        • You can also use clear PVA glue if you do not have shoe glue.
      3. Turn and rotate the jar to cover the inside. Pick up the jar and start turning and twisting it in your hand to cover the inside of the jar. Turn the bowl aside and roll it in your hands to get an even layer of the food color mixture all over the inside of the jar. [7]
        • Do not turn the jar upside down until the inside is completely coated with food coloring. Then pour the excess into the small bowl to use on another jar or discard.
      4. Place the jar upside down on a paper towel to dry. Use 2 to 3 layers of paper towel to catch any excess glue that drips down as the jar dries. Pick up the jar every 15 minutes during the first hour to prevent the glue from collecting and sticking to the paper towel. Then turn the jar on the right side and allow the jar to dry overnight.
