How to measure spaghetti

For the most part, when cooking spaghetti, it is tempting to just throw away one serving size rather than measuring accurately. But sometimes it’s important to get exact amounts of servings, like if you follow a recipe and try to keep a good sauce to pasta ratio or do enough for a group of people, or if you try to stick to a certain diet that requires an exact amount portions. Whatever the reason, there are various methods that use kitchen utensils or household items to measure perfect or approximate serving sizes of spaghetti.

  1. Weigh dry spaghetti in kitchen scale. This is the most accurate method of measuring serving sizes. If you have a kitchen scale, take some of the dry spaghetti out of the box, place it on the scale and see what the original measurement is. Add or remove as needed to reach the desired amount of pasta portions.

    • If you do not have a kitchen scale, you can buy them from many retailers.[1] These are very useful devices for people who like to cook.
  2. Use a spaghetti measuring tool if there is one. These are small units with holes of different sizes cut in them, and each hole corresponds to a different number of portions, usually 1 serving up to 4 portions. Take a small amount of dry spaghetti out of the box and place it through the hole that matches the number of servings you want to make. Add spaghetti noodles to fill the hole completely.

  3. Fill the hole in a pasta spoon to quickly go from measuring to cooking. If you’ve always wondered what this hole in your pasta spoon is for, it works in the same way as a spaghetti measuring tool![3] Put a small amount of dry spaghetti through the hole in the middle of the spoon and then add the noodles until the hole is filled. When you are full, drop the spaghetti into the pot. Repeat this if necessary if you make more than one serving.

  1. Compare the size of a small mass of noodles with the United States quarter. A serving of spaghetti, when tied in a circle, has a diameter of. This is the same size as an American quarter. If you have one of them around, collect a small bunch of spaghetti and place it on top of a quarter. Add noodles until the block is completely blocked by spaghetti, but no more than fits on top.[4]

  2. Place a serving of noodles through the top of a soda bottle. The hole in the top of a soda bottle also happens to have about the same diameter as a serving of spaghetti. To measure this way, stand the bottle upright on a table and put a small amount of noodles in the bottle. You should continue to hold the noodles so that they do not spread and ruin the measurement. Add more spaghetti until the bottle opening is filled.[5]
    • If you like this method but do not want an empty soft drink bottle that takes up dishes or storage space, cut off the top and store it in a box. Use it as you would with a spaghetti measuring tool.
  3. Approximate serving by making a circle with your fingers. This method is less accurate than the others because they all have hands of different sizes, but if you do not have the necessary tools for the other methods, it can be a good rough estimate. Make a circle with your thumb and forefinger; try to approximate the size of the top of a bottle. Use your other hand to avoid ruining the circle and place the spaghetti noodles through your fingers until the circle is full.[6]

  4. Divide the box of spaghetti into the amount of portions it contains. Boxes of spaghetti will contain the total number of servings on the nutrition label. Carefully pour all the spaghetti over a flat surface and divide this pile into equal parts that match the number of servings indicated on the label. Put the piles in bags or containers and use them as needed.[7]
