How to make Merengue

Merengue is a fast-paced Dominican dance that you can do with a partner or on your own. Each new dance takes practice to learn, but the merengue has some pretty basic steps that aren't hard to memorize. Once you get the essentials, you can have fun adding twists and turns to your dance with a partner.

  1. Mars in place at every beat. [1] If you & # 39; start marching with your right foot. If you lead, you start marching left. For each count of the beat, march 1 step. [2]

    • You don't have to pick up your feet very high – that's all you need to march in place. [19659010] Bend both knees slightly as you raise your feet. To give yourself a little bounce, keep your knees bent as you make each move. Try not to lock your knees, otherwise you may look stiff. Merengue is all about fluid, smooth movement. [3]

      • Keeping your knees bent also helps you keep your steps in a moving motion.
    • Change your weight to the foot you lose. Of course, for every step you take, let your hip fall down in time with your feet as you move your weight. You don't need excessive hip shaking or gyrating – just the natural hip movement that takes place as you change weight. [4]

      • Your hips may move slightly up and down as you swing back and forth.
      • This movement comes naturally to you as you practice the movements more.
    • Listen to merengue music to feel the rhythm. Merengue music is all in 4/4 time, so it's easy to apply to almost any song. Fernando Villalona, Juan Luis Guerra, Eddy Herrera and Toño Rosario are all artists with fantastic merengue music you can listen to and practice. [5]

[ Edit ] Dancing with a Partner

  1. Look at your partner and stand around each other. Merengue is a pretty intimate dance, so you want to start with someone you know quite well. Start by facing each other and then move closer so that there is not much distance between the two of you. [6]

  2. Place your hand on your partner's shoulder blade. Lift both arms up to approximately shoulder height. If you are the leader, place your right hand on your partner's left shoulder blade, and if you are the follower, place your left hand on your partner's right shoulder blade. [7]

  3. Hold your partner's free hand with your other hand. Now place your free arm up in an L-shape about shoulder height. Grab your partner's free hand in yours to get a secure grip. [9]

    • If you are the leading partner you will raise your left hand. If you are the successor, raise your right hand.
  4. Travel across the floor in a circle. [10] With this basic march step you start going back and forth, left and right. If you are the leading partner, rotate slowly in 360 degree turns. Take a full 8 strokes to make the turn and try not to rush your movements. [11]

    • If you feel groovy, take 16 bills to make the turn instead of 8.

[ Edit ] Adding advanced movements

  1. Try with one hand. As you do the basic steps, take your two partners' hands into your own. If you are the leading partner, hold one hand firmly and lift the other in the air and let your partner turn either inside or outside his own arm. If you are the follower, hold one hand on your partner and spin under your own arm in one direction. [12]
Do Merengue Step 9 Version 2.jpg
    • Keep the basic step up all the time! Turn at the same rate as you go: a relaxed 1, 2, 3, 4.
  2. Add to two-handed laps. Slide out to the same open position you would for one-handed turns, and raise both hands this time. If you are the following partner, go under both your arms in a 360-degree turn and end with crossed arms. To cross your arms, turn back in the opposite direction. [13]
      Do Merengue Step 10.jpg
  3. Make the hammer cap turn. If you are the leading partner, raise one hand in the air and turn your partner to the outside. If you are the following partner, wrap one of your arms behind your back and hold one arm out. This will put you right next to your partner so that you are side by side. If you are the leading partner, place your free hand on your partner's hip. [14]
      Do Merengue Step 11.jpg
    • If you like, keep this momentum and turn in a slow, 360 degree circle. Then, unwind the following partner by taking her free hand and spinning her back the other direction, resuming a normal posture.
  4. Add a hug. If you are the leader, raise one hand in the air and turn your partner to the inside. If you are the follower, tie your arms around yourself and stand directly in front of your partner. Then, if you are the leading partner, move your partner to the side and stand hip to the hip with them. [15]

    • You can take your moment to move in a circle, with the following partner going backwards.
