How to make lip balm without beeswax

If you prefer not to use beeswax or if you just do not have it on hand, you can still create a great lip balm or gloss! Coconut oil, shea butter, honey and castor oil can all be used in different proportions to create a firm, moisturizing lip gloss. For example, try a lip balm with honey with coconut oil or shea butter. You can also make your lip balm out of gelatin powder to give it structure or make a moisturizing shine from a mixture of oils and butter.

  1. Add shea butter or coconut oil to a small saucepan. You can double the amount if you want to create more lip balm. You can also place this in a double boiler, which is just a heatproof bowl over a pot that has boiling water in it. Do not allow the bottom of the bowl to touch the boiling water. The double boiler allows you to heat the oil or butter more slowly so that it does not burn.[1]

    • Another option is to put this in a small bowl with the microwave to heat in the microwave.
    • Shea butter is a better general moisturizer, as it contains vitamin E. But coconut oil is moisturizing.
  2. Heat the shea butter in the lowest setting. Because you use such a small amount of shea butter, it can burn easily. Keep an eye on it and set the burner to the lowest setting you can. Do not let it bubble! It warms up enough when the shea butter or coconut oil is melted.[2]

    • If you heat it in the microwave, start with 10 seconds and check it. Stir it and heat it in steps of 5 seconds after that.
  3. Add raw raw honey and 4-5 drops of essential oil. Remove the shea butter from the heat and let it cool for 2-3 minutes. Stir in honey and essential oil until well blended.[3]

    • Try peppermint, rose or essential essential oil.
    • If you do not want to use honey, you can substitute castor oil, which is a vegan ingredient. Use castor oil in the same proportions as honey. Honey moisturizes your lips and helps to exfoliate them, while castor oil is good for hydrating and managing chapped lips.
    • Instead of essential oil, you can try adding a few dashes of ground cinnamon.
  4. Pour lip balm into a container to cool. Choose an old lip balm container or a small container you have. You can use an old coin plastic, a small baby food jar or even an old (clean) pill bottle. Let it stand overnight to cool and solidify.[4]

    • You can store this lip balm at room temperature for several months.

  1. Heat coconut oil in the microwave. Start with 15 seconds. If it does not melt the oil, heat it at 5 second intervals. You need the coconut oil hot enough to liquefy and activate the gelatin. It does not mix well if it is still in its solid form. You can also use equal parts coconut oil and Vaseline.[5]

    • You may need to stir it a little to make sure it melts evenly.[6]
    • Coconut oil is moisturizing, while Vaseline helps seal moisture.
  2. Mix in 2 teaspoons (about 6 grams) of your favorite gelatin powder. Mix it in while the oil is hot and make sure to stir it thoroughly. The heat helps to activate the gelatin so that the lip balm will be applied properly.[7]

    • You can use whatever flavor you want, but remember that it also tones lip balm. Try raspberries, cherries or strawberries for a pink-red color. You can also go a little crazy with grape for a purple lip balm or blue raspberry for a light blue color. For a colorless conditioner, try colorless gelatin.
    • You can also use sugar-free gelatin, but you may need to use a little less powder. Experiment to see what works!
    • Gelatin mainly helps to put on lip balm, although the protein in gelatin can be beneficial.
  3. Add 6-8 drops of essential oil in a complementary taste. This step is optional, but it can add a little zing to your lip balm. For example, try lemon or mint oil with raspberries, grapefruit oil with cherries or orange oil with grape gelatin. Mix in the oil.[8]

    • Most essential citrus oils have antioxidant and antibacterial properties.
  4. Pour the mixture into a small container to set. You can use old lip balm tubes or a small container, such as a clean baby food bowl. Put it in the fridge to cool for 2-3 hours if you are in a hurry, or you can just let it sit overnight. You can use it when it has cooled completely and solidified a little.[9]

    • If you want to use several lip balm tubes, use a rubber band to tie them together. This makes it easier to pour lip balm into the tubes.
    • This should last for several months at room temperature as it does not have water in it. But if it smells or has mold, throw it out.

  1. Add castor oil, shea butter and coconut oil to a small saucepan. Pour in each of the castor oil and shea butter. Measure out the coconut oil and add it to the pan as well.[10]

    • If you want, you can replace castor oil with an equal proportion. Petroleum jelly seals moisture. Castor oil relieves chapped lips and hydrates. Both shea butter and coconut oil hydrate, but shea butter also has vitamin E, which is good for your skin.
    • You can also leave the shea butter if you want. Try adding more coconut oil.
    • You can also heat these in the microwave. If you want, use a small bowl with the microwave.
  2. Place the pan on low heat to melt the oils together. When the oils heat up, stir them occasionally to distribute the heat evenly. When the coconut oil and shea butter have melted and all the oils have been integrated, remove the pan from the heat.[11]

    • If you heat it in the microwave, start with 15-20 seconds and check it. Heat it in 5 second steps until the oils have melted and mixed together.
  3. Pour in a few drops of the essential oil of your choice after removing the oil from the heat. Try 10-15 drops of essential oil, such as grapefruit, lemon or orange for a summery lip balm. Alternatively, add peppermint for a cool lip balm. If you like floral flavors, use lavender or rose oil.[12]

    • Citrus essential oils have antioxidant and antibacterial properties.
    • Cloves or cinnamon are also good options, but you should start with just a few drops. They can become overwhelming very quickly. They have a warming effect on your lips.
    • If you do not have any essential oils, you can try spraying 1/4 a packet with a drink powder mixture, such as Kool-Aid or Crystal Light, which gives color and flavor.
    • For a natural shade, add 1/4 teaspoon (1.5 grams) of beetroot powder.
  4. Put lip balm in a small container to cool. Stick it in an old lip balm container, a small coin plastic or something else you have on hand. Let it cool overnight or stick it in the fridge to cool faster.[13]

    • It is ready when the lip balm has cooled and solidified.
    • This should last for several months at room temperature.

  • If you do not have coconut oil, you can try shea butter, cocoa butter or Vaseline.
  • You can substitute extracts as vanilla extract for essential oil, although it may not be mixed together.

  • Be careful when handling hot pots and bowls. Always use oven doors!
