How to make a homemade weight set

Weight to improve your strength and fitness can be done by many common household items. Milk jug, preserves and various everyday items can help keep you in shape. So save your money and stay in shape at the same time!

  1. Use a milk jug. Fill a clean plastic jug with water, sand, stones or concrete. Make sure the jug has a handle; you will use this to complete your training reps. Use the handles to lift and lower the jug the same way you would for any dumbbell or dumbbell.

    • With milk jug weights you can do bicep curls, tricep exercises, curved rows, pec flight, deadlifts and shoulder raises.
    • You can also keep these weights on your sides when doing squats or lunges.
  2. Lift canned goods. Preserved items that fit into your hands work well as simple dumbbells. This is especially good if you are starting out and trying to build muscle slowly. Use larger canned goods such as heavier weights or medicine balls.

  3. Make dumbbells of plastic water bottles. Instead of recycling your plastic water and soda bottles, fill them with water or put pebbles or sand in them instead. When filling them, make sure to weigh them so the weights are the same for both hands. Lift the bottles as if on a dumbbell. [1]

  4. Make arm weights with water bottles. Instead of using the water bottles for dumbbells, this method attaches several bottles to your arms as a wrist weight. Fill them with sand before putting them on your arms. For heavier weights, add water after filling them completely with sand.

    • When filled, tape the plastic bottles around your forearm. The tape does not touch your skin; it just touches the bottles to hold them together. You can also use duct tape, do not attach it to the skin. Place the bottles tightly enough so that they do not slip from your arms.
  5. Make a weighted medicine ball from a basketball. Take an old basketball and drill a hole in one of the black stripes. The hole should be large enough to funnel the weighted material. Place a funnel in the hole and fill with sand or pebbles until you have reached the desired weight. Use a bicycle tire protection kit to fill the hole.     • Use a scale to adjust the weight. Fill the sock as full as you want based on weight and then cut excess fabric. If you want to make heavier weights but the inner material does not fit, use a larger sock.
    • When choosing a sock, make sure you choose one long enough to wrap around your wrist. If the sock is too long, refill it until it is wrapped around the wrist and then cut the excess fabric before ending the end.
  7. Use packets of rice or beans. These packages are good for mini weight if you are a beginner. You can use them directly from the cabinet for bicep curls and other small weight lifting moves.

  8. Cut bicycle tire tubes in dumbbells. Take an inner tube on the bike and cut it into equal lengths. Attach one end of the tube with duct tape, then fill the tube with sand.   2. Make a barbell with water bottles. Take two packages of 6 bottles each and channel them symmetrically into an iron bar that you can easily grab. This barbell will be good for all exercises you do with a barbell, such as lifts and presses.

    • If these two packs are too much, do not use half-filled bottles. Half filled bottles will trip around and shake the bar. Instead, drop single filled bottles to the bar.
    • If two packages are not enough, use four or six packages of bottles taped to the bar. Alternatively, tape individual bottles to each end of the bar. First line them horizontally along the stack side by side, then stack them on top of each other. Make sure you leave plenty of room for your hands to grip the rod in wide and narrow grips.
    • The tape must be functional. Make horizontal, vertical and diagonal rounds to pack the packaging for the bar.
  3. Find old tires lying around the yard. Tires are used in many exercise and bodybuilding routines. You can add additional weights to regular tires when doing a workout, or you can go to a junkyard and find tractor tires.
