How to know if a worm is effective against coronavirus

As of July 2020, the World Health Organization recommends that you wear a medical face mask if you have symptoms of COVID-19 and wear non-medical face masks if there are high transmission rates in your area and you cannot distance yourself socially.[1] Face masks can help prevent the spread of COVID-19 by catching the drops from your mouth while talking, breathing or coughing.[2] Because many people want to buy and wear face masks, it can be difficult to tell if yours is effective against the spread of the COVID-19 virus. By inspecting your mask and buying it from a reputable seller, you can ensure that you protect yourself and others when you are out in public.

[[[[Edit]Step

[[[[Edit]To put on non-medical cloth masks

  1. Choose a mask made of thick cotton. Cotton blankets, cotton sheets and a cotton T-shirt are all fantastic materials to make a mask from. If you make your own, try to choose fabric that is tightly woven so that it can catch the water droplets coming out of your mouth.[3]

    • If you are not sure if your fabric is woven tightly enough, hold it up to the light. If you can see the light shining through, try to go for another fabric.
  2. Check if there are 2 to 3 layers of fabric on fabric masks. Fabric coverings are only effective when there are two or more layers of fabric. Make sure the one you are wearing has at least two layers, if not more.[4]

    • The double fabric layers help to catch more water drops when you talk, cough or breathe.
    • Ideally, the outer layer of the mask should be water resistant, the inner layer should be water-absorbent and the middle layer should act as a filter between the two.
  3. Make sure the mask fits snugly against your chin and cheeks. Put on the mask by looping the ear loops over the ears. Look in the mirror to see if there are any gaps around the nose, chin or cheeks. If available, you may need a smaller mask.[5]

    • If there are gaps around your face, the air you breathe in and out may come out, making the mask ineffective.[6]
    • Try to avoid touching the mask itself when adjusting it. Instead, pull the earrings to avoid contaminating your hands.
  4. Wash your mask if it is damp or dirty. If your mask is visibly dirty or feels damp, put it in the washing machine in a hot water cycle with detergent. Let the washing machine run its entire cycle and then hang the mask to dry before using it again.[7]

    • Ideally, you should wash your mask after each use. If you intend to wear it again without washing it, seal it in a plastic bag until you are ready to wear it again.

[[[[Edit]Use a surgical mask

  1. Make sure your surgical mask is FDA approved. Surgical masks are the loose-fitting thin blue masks that wrap around the ears and cover the nose and mouth. If you buy a surgical mask, make sure you look for the Food and Drug Administration or the FDA logo on the package to ensure that it is a reputable source.[8]

    • Surgical masks usually have 3 layers of protection, but they are often not visible if you do not cut the mask.
    • Non-FDA-approved masks may not have the level of protection needed to slow the spread of COVID-19.
    • While surgical masks help keep air droplets out of your mouth, they are not effective at filtering airborne particles that you inhale.
  2. Discard your mask if it is torn or dirty. Before putting on a surgical mask, check if it is torn or dirty somewhere. If so, discard your mask and replace it with a new one.[9]

  3. Apply the mask tightly to the nose, cheeks and chin. If you are wearing a surgical mask, pull the loops over your ears and bend the top to fit around the bridge of the nose. There should be no large gaps on your cheeks where air can escape.[10]

    • Spacing between the mask and the skin can allow water droplets to flow into the air and potentially spread the COVID-19 virus.
  4. Discard your surgical mask after use. Unfortunately, surgical masks are not reusable, and you should discard them after using them once. Be sure to remove the mask in the earrings and throw the mask in a trash can with a plastic bag in it to avoid contaminating your hands or your home.[11]

    • Surgical masks are only made for one use, so they become less effective over time.

[[[[Edit]Wear an N95 mask

  1. Make sure your N95 respirator is NIOSH approved. Respiratory protection is a tight fitting mask that wraps around the back of your head or ears. If you buy a respirator, make sure it is approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, or NIOSH. This will ensure that it can filter out 95% of airborne particles.[12]

    • Respiratory protection not approved by NIOSH may not have sufficient filtration to protect against the spread of COVID-19.
  2. Apply the mask tightly to the cheeks, nose and chin. Pull the straps up and over the head and secure one around the neck and the other on the back of the head. Check the seal of the respirator to make sure there are no gaps between the mask and the skin to ensure that it filters air effectively.[13]

    • If you can get your finger between your mask and your skin, go for a smaller size.
    • Respiratory protection should be tight fitting and they can leave marks on your skin if you wear them for a long time.
  3. Discard your N95 mask if it is torn or dirty. You can reuse respirators until they appear visibly damp, dirty, or broken. If yours is endangered, throw it in a trash can lined with a plastic bag to avoid contamination. Although N95 masks usually cannot be reused, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued an exemption during the global pandemic.[14]

    • You should also discard the respirator if it becomes difficult to breathe through while wearing it.

[[[[Edit]Use a mask correctly

  1. Pull on the mask in the loops. To put on the mask, pick it up through the loops on the sides and pull them up and over the ears. Or grab the straps and pull them over your head and neck if you use respirators. If you need to adjust your mask, pull the loops or straps back and forth until it fits snugly on your face.[15]

    • If you touch the front of the mask while touching it, wash your hands with soap and water.
  2. Avoid touching the mask when it is on the face. When you are out trying to keep your hands away from your face as best you can. Avoid touching the mask to remove it, pull it down or adjust it so that you do not contaminate your hands.[16]

    • If you touch your mask, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer to clean your hands.
  3. Keep the mask on until you have a social distance from other people. If you are not in an area where you can live at least away from others, you should keep your mask on. Taking off the mask while you are near others can spread the COVID-19 virus, even if only for a moment.[17]

    • If you are not sure if you need to wear a mask in public, check the state or county guidelines.
  4. Remove the mask by pulling on the loops or straps. Remove the mask by grasping the earlobes or headbands and gently pulling them up and away from the face. Avoid touching the mask as much as possible to prevent contamination of your hands.[18]

    • Your mask may have filtered out some contaminants that are stuck to the front of the mask, so you want to avoid touching it.
  5. Wash your hands after removing the mask. Use soap and warm water, scrub your hands thoroughly, take your palms, fingers and under your nails. Rinse your hands thoroughly and wipe them with a clean towel when you are done.[19]
