How to cook with the food in your pantry



Whether quarantine is trapped inside or if you try to eat through your pantry before a big move, there is a method for the madness to gum your way through food shelves.

Clean It Out

If you have space, start by pulling everything out of your pantry and cupboard. Put everything on the table and start putting things into categories. Place cans together, noodles together, box dinners together, and so on. When sorting, look at maturity dates. Unless you keep your pantry lean, chances are you've run out of food hiding in there.

Clear out your valid goods and stale items and then place the rest of your food back in your pantry in an organized manner. This will help you remember all the food you have in your pantry. If you have objects that are near to expire, keep them close to the front.

Call in a sub

When you cook things in your pantry, things like misplaced dishes become quite simple. Cooking with some of the items in your pantry will be a little more difficult. It helps to know a little about basic food substitutes.

Apple locks and mashed bananas can be replaced with eggs. The ratio is three tablespoons of mashed fruit per egg.

Baking powder and cream of tartar can be used instead of baking powder. The ratio is one quarter teaspoon of baking powder to one teaspoon of baking powder and half a teaspoon of cream tartar to one teaspoon of baking powder.

Change bread crumbs for crushed biscuits in one to one ratio and use plain yogurt instead of sour cream, even in one to one ratio.

If you need tomato paste and do not have any, you can put double the amount of tomato sauce in a saucepan and cook it until it reduces to the amount of tomato paste you need.

More known, butter can be exchanged for shortening in one to one ratio. In a pinch, you can also substitute butter for half the amount of vegetable oil. So if your recipe requires a cup of butter, you can use half a cup of oil.

Cook it Up

There are several simple meals that you can whip up in a pinch that comes only from your pantry and cupboard. It is often good to plan one week at a time so you can measure what you need from your pantry and when. When you cook in a scramble you sometimes find yourself in a binder without ingredients or you accidentally use something you need for another recipe. When you are just trying to cook with things in your pantry, try some of these quick and easy ideas.

Homemade refried beans

Bags with pinto beans can sit in your pantry for years but it is easy to make homemade beans. Take your crockpot and fill it with water. Dip half a kilo of pinto beans into the water and let them soak overnight. In the morning, drain all the water from the beans, fill the pot with fresh water and cook on low for eight hours. You can season the beans as you like, but we recommend using chicken gold and onions and garlic salt. When the beans are fine and soft, drain all but a quarter cup of liquid and mix the beans with an electric mixer.

Refrigerator Upgrade: You can break only the pantry rules and add butter and cheese if you like.

Mashed potatoes

Take potatoes and peel and slice them into thin slices. Drop a jar of corn and put it aside with the potatoes as well. Put the potatoes and corn in a hot frying pan with a quarter of a cup of water and let them boil and soften. When they soften, add a jar of cream mushroom soup to the mesh and allow the mixture to thicken together. Add steak seasoning for an extra kick and eat nice and warm.

The upgrade of the fridge: add meat, carrots, other vegetables or mushrooms to the mixture as well.

Cake in a Cup

Take four tablespoons of cake mix and mix it with two tablespoons of water in a mug. Microwave in the mug for forty-five seconds and allow the cake to cool for a minute, then enjoy.

Freeze upgrade: add a scoop of ice cream to your baked creation.
