How to bleach design clothes

Making designs with bleach is super fun and it is a great way to show your sense of style and personality. If you want to add some pizzazz to your clothes, you can use freezer paper to create a stencil and create a complicated design. Or you can use a tie-dye method with bleach instead of dye to make interesting, eye-catching patterns.

  1. Take a garment made of mostly cotton or linen. Bleach works best on cotton or linen garments, as bleach adheres well to these fibers. Avoid using high quality materials such as silk or velvet. [1]

    • You can use any color clothing you want except white.
  2. Print or draw a design on plain paper. Choose which design you like and either draw with pencil or print it on a regular sheet of paper. Make your design big and not too complicated to make it look good on your clothes. [2]

    • If you have a Cricut manufacturer, you can use it to cut out letters and patterns of freezing paper. This is great for more complicated, detailed designs.
  3. Turn the paper over and place it face down on a sheet of freezing paper. Freezer paper has two sides. One page is plain paper that you can print on and the other has a waxy coating on it. Place your paper with a design on the waxy side of the freezer paper. [3]
    • You will find freezer paper in the baking section of most grocery stores.
  4. Cut out your design in freezer paper with a razor blade. Set your freezer paper and design on a rubber cutting mat so that you do not damage any surfaces in your home. Use a razor blade to gently cut out your design in the freezer paper. [4]
    • A razor blade helps you get the most detailed design.
  5. Use paint tape for a geometric design. If you want to make stripes, squares or triangles on your clothing item, place thin pieces of paint tape on your shirt or trousers instead of a stencil. Make sure you press down the tape completely on the clothes so that no bleach can leak through. [5]

    • You can also use paint tape to create simple letters.

[ Edit ] Bleaching Your Design

  1. Place a cardboard piece on the inside of your clothing item. Lay the clothes on a flat surface. Place a cardboard box between the front and back of the clothes. This helps protect the other side of your shirt, trousers or shirt. [6]
  2. Put your design on your clothes and pass it on with an iron. Place your design in the area where you want it to go on your clothes. Carefully place a hot iron over the design to attach the freezer paper to the clothing. Use the iron 1 to 2 times until the design sticks to the fabric. [7]
    • This helps the design stay in place when you spray it with bleach and reduce the smear.
  3. Make a 1: 1 ratio of water and bleach in a spray bottle. Use a spray bottle that can give a nice mist. Mix 1 part bleach and 1 part water in the spray bottle. Watering down the bleach helps it spread more easily and create a more beautiful design. [8]
    • Wear gloves to protect your hands before pouring bleach.
  4. Lightly mist the area with your design with the bleach spray. Keep the spray bottle away from the clothing. Gently press down on the spray bottle until the bleach solution comes out. Cover your entire design area with the bleach spray until it is the color you want. [9]
    • The more bleach layers you add, the easier your design becomes.
  5. Sprinkle bleach on your clothes with a brush for a splatter effect. If you do not want a complete block of bleach in your design or you want to spice up the edges, dip a brush in your bleach solution. Girl on brush over clothes to create random drops of bleach. The more bleach you use, the bigger the drops. [10]
    • Rinse the paintbrush well after using it to get rid of all bleach.
  6. Draw pattern with a pencil for more control. Buy a bleach pen to remove stains. Use this pen to draw on your clothing item and create shapes, words or intricate patterns. The small tip of the pencil gives you more control over your design. [11]

    • You can buy bleach pens at most home goods stores.
  7. Remove the stencil and rinse your clothes in cold water. Leaving the bleach on your clothes will make it lighter and easier when it dries. Remove the stencil and rinse the item in cold water to prevent the bleach from becoming lighter. Let your clothing item dry and then show it to your friends! [12]
    • You can wash and dry your clothes as you would normally do after wearing it.

[ Edit ] Tie-Dying with bleach

  1. Put a black garment on a flat surface. Tie killer with bleach shows up best on black clothes. Lay it out on a flat surface, like a table, where you can easily work with it. [13]

  2. Grab the middle of the clothes and twist it in and around itself. Use a hand to squeeze the middle part of the clothes and pull it up slightly. Wrap the clothes around this middle section until it forms a loose circle. [14]
    • You can also roll the clothes by themselves to create a different pattern with your bleach.
  3. Wrap 5 to 10 rubber bands around your object to keep it twisted. Use large, thick rubber bands that are sturdy enough to stay in place. Wrap some around your clothing until it stays in place and probably won't regret working with it. [15]
    • You can buy rubber bands at most home or office supplies.
  4. Make a 1: 1 ratio of bleach and water in a spray bottle. Wear gloves to protect your hands. Use a spray bottle with a small opening so you can control the syringe of bleach. Pour 1 part bleach and 1 part water into your spray bottle. [16]

  5. Pour your bleach mixture over your clothes. Protect the surfaces by placing the clothing in a container that is not damaged by bleach, such as a plastic bucket or bathtub. Use your spray bottle to pour your bleach mixture onto your clothes. You can do as much or as little as you want depending on how much bleach you want on your item. [17]
    • Make sure you hit all sides of your clothing item with bleach so it looks even. [19659009] Let the bleach sit for 30 minutes. Let the bleach soak into the fabric by letting it sit. You can speed up this process by placing your bleached object in the sun. If your item starts to get lighter than you want it, unpack it and rinse it immediately. [18]
        Bleach Design Clothes Step 18.jpg
    • Unpack your clothes and rinse them out with cold water. Remove the rubber bands from the clothing and discard them. Rinse the item under a cold water tap for 1 to 2 minutes. Allow the item to dry before wearing it. [19]

      • You may want to wash the item on your own the first times it gets dirty so that the bleach is not transferred to any of your other clothes.
