Start by vacuuming

First, do a thorough vacuuming job on the carpet you are going to clean. Move furniture and cords so you can get each spot on the carpet with the vacuum to remove as much debris as possible. Vacuum in two directions to be most effective – the directions should be perpendicular to each other.

Test the Carpet Cleaner

Read the instructions for using the carpet cleaner you rented and start in a small, discreet area to ensure that it works as expected and does not cause any snags – such as painting the carpet. From there, use the detergent to treat prominent stains on the carpet. For really stubborn stains, you may want to treat them in advance with a specific stain remover, cloth and brush before going over them with the carpet cleaner for best results.

Go to cleaning

Now that you have had some practice and dealt with the problem areas, go to town with the carpet areas. Make sure it is filled with warm water. When you push the machine forward, it releases the water and steam to clean the carpet. When you move the machine backwards over the same stains, it sucks up the water it had deposited to keep the carpet as dry as possible and to prevent mold and mildew from developing. Be careful and methodical in your cleaning patterns for best results.

Let the carpet dry

Once you have cleaned the carpet, let it dry for 24 hours. If possible, open windows to let in fresh air to facilitate drying or use a fan (or both). When the carpet is completely dry, run a vacuum over it again to pick up any remaining debris or dust. Then put back your furniture and your carpet and the room feels as good as new!

Carpet cleaning is an important part of keeping your home clean, so do not delay doing this in your home.
