The COVID-19 pandemic has affected every corner of the world economy, and few sectors have been affected more severely than home and business buildings. Contractors such as construction workers, plumbers and electricians install new safety guidelines to protect their customers and employees during this time. We gathered the official responses from ten leading companies in the field to highlight the steps they are taking to meet this challenge.
If you or your company conducts contract work, or if you are looking for ways to talk to contractors about precautions to take in your home, consider implementing some of these methods to help create the safest possible conditions for everyone.
Mandating Protective Gear
Although not required by local authorities, top companies enforce their own standards for protective equipment such as masks and gloves.
PCL Construction Enterprises: "All persons (workers, visitors, consultants, and suppliers) should wear a physical respirator or fabric face covering sufficiently in size and shape to cover the wearer's nose and mouth. This requires that All people on our sites participate in he always uses fabric face protection. Breathing protection can be manufactured or manufactured at home. They can be of a type that can be washed or disposable. In addition to the current PPE requirements and similar protection, glove wear is mandatory in all workplaces. "
Skanska: " [We have] strengthened glove policy requirements, requiring that "coated gloves" are always required, [and are] which requires additional PPE where construction activity does not allow adequate social distance. "
Monitoring Worker Health
Keeping the workers at home when they are sick is a major concern for companies that send employees to people's homes, or to large workplaces where they work closely together. Many companies require workers who cannot work remotely to stay home when they show signs of illness.
Turner Construction: "To ensure the health and safety of every person on a Turner project, workers must stay home if they are not well."
Physician: "Stay home when you are sick."
PCL Construction Enterprises: "If you have flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough or congestion, do not come to work, contact your supervisor and staff department to inform them that you are exhibiting the symptoms and consult a healthcare professional. If you work in a PCL office or a PCL workplace and have been exposed to someone with a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis or COVID-19 symptoms (fever, cough, difficulty breathing) , advise your supervisor. PCL will make an assessment of your particular circumstances to inform your work arrangements and your employees. "
Kiewit Corporation: " We established dedicated processes and staff, trained to use detailed Exposure intake questionnaires to document, to accurately track all confirmed and presumptive positive COVID-19 cases, and implement strictly clean ring, quarantine and return to work protocol. We have worked closely with all employees, subcontractors, suppliers, owners and others to ensure that everyone who is sick or thinks they have been exposed to COVID-19 refuses to enter our offices and project sites.
This includes in certain locations, which require pre- and post-access and pre-access and periodic temperature screening health issues. We have also severely restricted visitors' access to our offices and project sites and have demanded that office staff is not necessary to work from home. "
Haskell: " All offices / project visitors [must] complete a certificate of travel and current health status. "
Compulsory social distancing
Health organizations around the world have issued recommendations to maintain space between people to limit the spread of COVID-19 so the companies formalize these procedures.
Kiewit Corporation: "We developed protocols, procedures and best practices to ensure that employees practice recommended social distancing (separation of 6 feet or more) to the extent possible, including protocols for transport of staff at workplaces, use of buses / shuttles and driving / riding in the company's trucks, vans and buses. At our project sites, we provide surgical masks for specific surgeries that may require closer proximity to ensure the safety of personnel and other face protection tools for daily operations. "
Skanska: " Non-essential business meetings and employee participation in large business meetings or events have been postponed or moved to a virtual meeting using remote meeting technology where possible Working remotely is available and strongly encouraged where possible and practical for one's role. "
PCL Construction Enterprises: " Meetings and events in personal locations should be avoided where possible. In the office, meetings and events with more than five people should not be held in person. In the workplace, meetings may not have more than 15 people in person. Meetings should be held in the area where a person works instead of a large gathering place.
Project groups should distort breaks and lunch plans to minimize the number of people close to each other. Meetings should be held in the area where a person works, rather than in a large gathering place such as a conference or break room. Meetings and events with more than five people should not be held in person. "
Turner Construction: " Turner's social distance guidelines respect a distance of six meters or greater. Projects reduce meetings by distorting arrival and departure times for trade, establishing distinct work areas and limiting the number of people in all work spaces, common areas and lifting devices. People are discouraged from meeting each other when traveling in a lift. "
Facilitating Defensive Hygiene
Professional construction companies go beyond recommendations on hand washing to give employees the tools they need to stay clean and safe wherever they are
Kiewit Corporation: "With the guidance and direct involvement of industry-leading industrial hygienists, we implemented stricter office and project cleaning and hygiene protocols at all locations and developed specific viral contamination protocols to address confirmed and prospective COV 19 exposures. We also developed stricter protocols for cleaning tools, vehicles and equipment. "
Skanska: " [We are] which provides additional alcohol-based hand sanitizing and washing stations. [We recommend that you] Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue and then toss the tissue in the trash. If you do not have a tissue, cough or sneeze in the elbow.
Do not share personal items or supplies such as phones, pens, notebooks, PPE, etc. Avoid shaking hands with others. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before you eat; and after blowing in the nose, coughing or sneezing. If hot water is not available, use hand sanitizer. "
PCL Construction Enterprises: " Hand sanitizer should be available at or near entry points to the project and at various high traffic locations throughout the project, e.g. door openings, field tables, tool chairs, lifting devices, water tanks, etc. Hot and cold running water and hand soap should be available in bathrooms, lunch rooms and kitchens. If hot and cold running water is not available, hand sanitizer will be made available. "
House Doctors: " Step we take [include] cleaning of frequently touched surfaces, [and employees washing] often happens with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before you eat; and after blowing the nose, coughing or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, [they should] use an alcohol-based hand cleaner with at least 60% alcohol. "
Turner Construction: " Turner projects provide access to hand washing stations. Often cleaning and disinfecting objects and surfaces helps maintain a safe place. These areas include: elevator, tables, microwaves, coffee makers, turnstiles, handrails, buses for transporting workers, door handles, bathrooms and all common areas. "
Securing Financial Transactions
This pandemic has increased uncertainty and in some cases created gaps in communication that bad actors have tried to exploit. Turner Construction: "There are individuals who are using this situation to target corporate financial trading. We will not change payment instructions via email or text. Please do not act or accept any requests to change the payment instructions set out in your agreement with Turner unless the communication comes directly from a Vice President of Turner by regular mail, and you follow up a phone call to Turner on a number you know is correct. "
Intensifying cleaning routines
One of the most effective measures to prevent viral dissemination is rigorous cleaning of frequently affected areas . Lendlease Group: "Throughout Lendlea's corporate workplaces, our cleaning system includes the use of complete disinfectant on hard surfaces, high touch points and high traffic areas, and ongoing hygienic daytime cleaning. . . To help people work at our global construction sites safely and healthily, we have increased the frequency and intensity of our cleaning procedures. "
Skanska: " Increased and improved cleaning and remediation of third party specialty cleaning contractors of highly affected areas, high traffic areas, equipment, tools and vehicles. "
PCL Construction Company: " Before work begins every day or shift, high traffic areas (in terms of hand contact) in offices, meeting rooms, orientation rooms, coffee and kitchen spaces, workstations, portable and permanent washrooms and common areas the working spaces should be cleaned. . . Hard surfaces and buttons that your hands can encounter on frequently affected items such as refrigerators, microwaves, water cooler handles, taps and taps, light switches and other high-traffic items should be cleaned after each use. "
Verifying Supply Chain's
Delivery service and inventory have been significantly affected by the global efforts to combat coronavirus, so contracting companies are taking extra steps to ensure their deliveries are available when and where they were "
Turner Construction: " Turner monitors supply chains worldwide for actual delays that may affect our ability to maintain the schedule of our work. "
Restricting Access to Workplaces
Restricting the number of people on a site helps to meet social distance guidelines and minimizes the risk of accidental pollution by unnecessary visitors.
Suffolk Construction: "Suffolk safety protocols for workplaces include minimizing personal meetings and large gatherings; maintaining social distance guidelines of six meters or more; installing additional hand-washing and sanitizing devices; mapping all individuals daily at workplaces to ensure that they are symptom-free; post highly visible signs related to COVID-19 protocols; thoroughly clean and disinfect all risk areas and portable bathrooms several times daily; and establish strict safety criteria for food trucks. Our safety protocols, training and checklists will continue to be developed in response to the new development. "
Skanska: " [We have instituted] new screening measures at the gates to the workplace. "
PCL Construction Enterprises: " PCL has implemented improved screening measures to reduce the spread of CO VID-19 virus: All employees and business people who have access to both offices and workplaces will be required screening before entering these locations. Screening is optional but all persons who refuse screening are denied access to the workplace. "
Turner Construction: " Website access is limited to those important to the continuity of the project. If you have had close contact with a person who has a confirmed positive test result for COVID-19, you are not allowed in a Turner workplace or office for 14 days from the contact date. If you have a fever, cough and breathing difficulties, seek medical attention early and stay away from others. You are not allowed in a Turner facility. "
Employee Travel Limitation
Most flights require exposure to group settings, which increases the chance of exposure to the virus. Some companies explicitly limit employee travel. and requires quarantine periods after travel.
Kiewit Corporation: "We have banned virtually all corporate travel unless approved by executive leadership. We have also demanded that all employees report their personal travel plans so we can closely monitor and take all necessary steps to maintain the safety of our staff. "
Haskell: " [We have] suspended international travel, non-essential domestic travel and postponed events, exhibitions and large group meetings [and] required that all employees who have traveled internationally or to COVID- 19 high-risk areas, self-quarantine for 14 days. " Skanska: " Skanska has implemented a global ban on international travel that is currently valid until April 30, 2020 and has only limited domestic flights for business-critical purposes. Employees traveling to a high-risk country, as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), are required to self-quarantine for 14 days after their return and before visiting a Skanska office or workplace. "
PCL Construction Enterprises: " Non-essential business trips should cease until further notice. There may be some limited exceptions to this rule for unavoidable and essential corporate or personnel reasons. Overall, the risk to your health and your family's health, your PCL colleagues and the communities we work in created by personal travel is difficult to measure. For these reasons, we encourage employees to postpone or cancel their personal travel plans. "
Shifting to Remote Work
If possible, contracting organizations with administrative components move these business elements online and minimize interaction between people. This reduces number of people in workplaces, which limits the potential spread of the virus.
Haskell: "Haskell [has] moved the majority of our office-based team members to a teleworking arrangement. . . All office locations and active project sites continue to function. "
Kiewit Corporation: " We postponed social gatherings, large personal training sessions and other activities with groups of 10 or more. "

The greater the workforce, the more important it is to maintain communication lines. Clear, uniform standards can better protect both customers and employees. Kiewit Corporation: "For employees, we established a robust, regularly updated COVID-19 information hub with frequently asked questions, important communications, regularly updated protocols, business planning tools, best practices, signs / flyers and other important resources. "
Skanska: " Employees have access to an internal website via the web or an app. This site provides daily updates related to COVID-19, Skanska recommended policies and more. "
Kiewit Corporation: " We have significantly increased communication, signage and monitoring of personal hygiene requirements to drive better prevention methods. "
