Installing the carpet is one of those things that looks pretty easy on TV shows and even if you see it in person. It’s just because the people you see installing carpet on TV and in professional situations have the right tools, equipment and knowledge to be able to do the job properly. It is actually very easy to screw on carpets and end up with a big mess. Learn how to avoid all the common mistakes that many people make when installing the carpet, so that you get a nice floor that you are proud to show ff.
1. Does not acclimatize
Take time to acclimatize to your rug, otherwise you may regret it later. Carpets are often a bit stiff when purchased. Store the carpet in your home and let it rest for a few days before you start installing so that the carpet stretches and is easier for you.
2. Fail to obtain the equipment
Yes, it is cheaper when you do DIY tasks such as mat installation on your own. But you probably do not already have the equipment that professional installers use to get this job done. Make sure you have adhesive strips to keep the carpet in step, carpet clippers, hammers, sewing tape, a putty knife, carpet glue and carpet nails. You need to make sure you have eye protection and give while you work.
3. Skip the measurements
It seems like the easiest step in any DIY project, but measurements actually make or break any home improvements you are trying to address. The measurement has not been extremely accurate because even a 1-inch difference can make a huge impact on the finished project. Yuo has to cut several rugs and measure it perfectly so that the seams are not visible. Remember that you have to install around every corner, every bend and every floor contour.
Check your measurements by first laying out the entire carpet on the floor to see exactly where the carpet needs to go and make the exact cuts you need to make. If your rug has any pattern at all, make sure the pattern matches perfectly everywhere. If the pattern is turned off just a little, it will ruin the look of the whole room.
4. Do not clean
Do not forget to clean when installing new carpet. You want to clean the floor as thoroughly as possible before placing new carpets on any floor. Just remember to wait and let the floor dry before starting the installation.
5. Skip the transition
Do not forget the area where the carpets end and begin. You want a smooth transition from one room to the next and a type of floor to the next. Ignoring transitions makes your project look sloppy and unfinished.
Ignore the seams
You need to place a continuous seam of glue along all the edges of the carpet you are placing. Do not forget to glue the carpet down properly, otherwise you will get curly edges that make your carpet look sloppy and actually create potential risks. Take your time and practice extra carefully with each matte stitch, as this is the only way to get a smooth, seamless look.
7. Does not extend
The carpet must be stretched when it is placed. This prevents bumps and lumps that ruin the look of the carpet. Professional installers use power stretchers to complete this task. If you can afford to rent this equipment or buy it, make the investment because it makes the job much easier. However, you can stretch a rug on your own with a knee kicker. This is a bit more labor intensive and takes longer.
Slowing down the process makes it as easy as possible to avoid mistakes. Take your time, measure twice and work slowly to install beautiful carpet. Test carpets to make sure they fit before placing, prepare the well and work slowly. If you avoid all the usual carpet installation errors, you will get a floor you can love.
